Formula for trucks: per-axle rate × number of axles. Small and medium personal vehicles under 2.3 m (7.5 ft) — most cars, SUVs, minivans, motorcycles and light-duty trucks — pay the flat rate instead of a per-axle toll. Oversized and hazardous vehicles pay the per-axle base rate plus possible special-handling fees.
Both bridges connect Windsor and Detroit. The Gordie Howe International Bridge undercuts the Ambassador Bridge on commercial tolls — roughly half the per-axle cost for a typical tractor-trailer.

Large commercial trucks pay a per-axle toll of $12.00 CAD ($8.75 USD) per axle at the standard rate. A typical five-axle tractor-trailer pays $60.00 CAD ($43.75 USD) per crossing. With a Breakaway prepaid business account the rate drops to $9.60 CAD ($6.90 USD) per axle, so the same five-axle truck pays $48.00 CAD ($34.50 USD).
Yes. The Ambassador Bridge charges roughly $15 USD per axle for A-Pass/E-ZPass commercial vehicles — about $75 USD for a five-axle truck. Gordie Howe's standard rate is $8.75 USD per axle (~$43.75 for five axles) and the Breakaway rate is $6.90 USD per axle (~$34.50). Gordie Howe is materially cheaper per crossing for commercial trucks.
Breakaway is the bridge's prepaid account program. Members receive a discounted per-axle toll — $9.60 CAD ($6.90 USD) per axle instead of the $12.00 CAD ($8.75 USD) standard rate — which adds up quickly for fleets making repeated Windsor–Detroit crossings. It applies to both large commercial and eligible passenger vehicles.
For large commercial vehicles the toll is the per-axle rate multiplied by the number of axles. At the $12.00 CAD standard rate a 2-axle truck is $24, 3-axle is $36, 4-axle is $48, 5-axle is $60 and 6-axle is $72. Small and medium personal vehicles under 2.3 m (7.5 ft) pay a flat $8.00 CAD ($5.75 USD) instead of a per-axle toll.
Yes. The toll is separate from customs clearance. Trucks entering Canada must file a CBSA ACI eManifest and trucks entering the United States must file a CBP ACE eManifest before arrival, regardless of which Windsor–Detroit bridge they use. The toll only pays for use of the crossing; it does not clear your shipment.
