Why the early window is the entire strategy

The renewal membership period starts the day following the expiration of the previous membership, continues five years, and ends on the member's subsequent birthday.
You are not shortening anything by filing eleven months early. The clock on your new five years does not start when you apply — it starts when the old membership runs out. Renewing at month one of the window and renewing at month eleven produce the same expiry date.
Which means the calculation is one-sided. Filing early costs nothing and buys a year of buffer against processing delays. Filing late costs nothing up front and risks the one thing you actually care about: uninterrupted lane access.

The processing-delay problem

Overlay that against the renewal rules and the picture is stark:
- Renewal filed inside the window, before expiry: benefits continue while it processes. A six-month wait is an administrative fact, not an operational one.
- Renewal filed after expiry: no continuation protection. A six-month wait is six months of a cross-border driver without FAST lane access.
The same delay produces either a non-event or a serious productivity problem depending entirely on a filing date. That is an unusually clean risk to manage — and an unusually painful one to get wrong, since nothing can be backdated after the fact.
How to renew
1. Log into the TTP portal. Use your existing Trusted Traveler Programs account — the same one used for the original application. Recovering lost credentials is a routine account-access matter, but do it before the window opens rather than on the day.
2. Start the renewal from your Dashboard. Select the Renew button in your FAST program membership section.
3. Complete the application. It covers the same ground as the original: personal information, employment history, travel history, and any criminal record or immigration matters. Discrepancies against your original filing invite questions, so accuracy matters more than speed.
4. Pay the US $50 fee. Non-refundable, paid at submission.
5. Complete an interview if you are asked to. Renewal is not guaranteed to require one, but it can. If it does, book it promptly — interview appointment availability, not the interview itself, is often the constraint.
6. Watch for the card. Continue using your existing card and benefits until the renewal finalizes, provided you filed before expiry.
Common ways drivers lose their FAST status
Waiting for a reminder. The expiry date on the card is the notice. Building your renewal trigger around an email that may or may not reach a current address is how memberships lapse.
Assuming a lapse is a formality. Once the membership has expired, the continuation protection is gone. There is no mechanism to retroactively bridge the gap.
Stale contact and employment details. Renewal vetting works against your record. An out-of-date address or employer complicates matters that should be routine.
Treating it as the driver's problem. For a carrier running cross-border lanes, a driver's FAST status is a scheduling constraint — it determines which lanes that driver can run efficiently. A fleet that tracks FAST expiries alongside licence, medical and endorsement dates never discovers the problem at dispatch.
Put FAST expiries in the same system as everything else
FAST is one of a set of driver credentials that share a shape: a hard expiry date, a real operational consequence, and a renewal lead time long enough that finding out late is expensive.
